Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial was built on a sloping 30 acre site, framed by ancient woodland, on land donated by the University of Cambridge. The cemetery contains the remains of 3,812 Us personnel. A further 5,127 individuals are commemorated on the wall of the Missing where rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. The majority died in the Battle of the Atlantic, in the strategic air bombardment of northwest Europe and the buildup to D-Day.
The wall of the Missing leads visitors to the Memorial Building, with its inter-faith chapel, and where two huge military maps dominate the walls. stained glass windows bear the state seals and military decorations. A vast mosaic ceiling honours the contribution and sacrifice of UsAAF personnel.
In the ‘Visitor Center’ interpretive exhibits incorporate personal stories, photographs, films, and interactive displays, where the visitor can gain a better understanding of this critical campaign which contributed to the Allied victory in Europe during world war II.
